Agia Efimia, Kefalonia
| |
Kefalonia is the largest island in the Ionian Sea, 786 sq. km. in area and with 254 km. of coastline. Considered as the jewel of the Ionian, the island is generously endowed by nature, a place with rare geological phenomena, mysterious caves, therapeutic springs and subterranean water with superb beaches, traditional villages and rich archaeological finds.

Agia Efimia is located in the enchanting Pylaros Valley area of Kefalonia - an area designated as being of outstanding natural beauty. Located on the east coast of Kefalonia, this is a fabulous base from where you can easily explore the rest of the island; both the north and south of Kefalonia are no more than one hour away by road.

Melissani Lake
Located a few minutes by car from Agia Efimia, the Melissani Lake is the most spectacular cave lake on the island. The cave is 100m long and a third is taken up by the lake which is 100 feet deep in places. It was officially discovered by Austrian divers and opened to the public in 1963. However, the locals were aware of it's existence many years earlier.
Assos
Assos is a picturesque village built on the neck of an enchanting peninsula. There is a bustling town square, lovely tavernas and a 15th century castle overlooking the town and Ionian sea.
Drogarati Caves
The Drogarati Caves are estimated to be in excess of 150 million years old. The caves were opened to the public in 1963 and have beautiful and rare stalagmites and stalactites. The acoustics in the cave are so good concerts are sometimes held there.
Myrtos Beach
This is possibly the most featured of Kefalonia's beaches in travel brochures and claimed to be one of the best beaches in the world. It is only a 10 minute drive from Agia Efimia. Myrtos Beach is protected against development, the only permitted facility being a single refreshment bar offering drinks, sandwiches and ice creams.
Fiscardo
This is the most northernmost port of Kefalonia. Some consider Fiscardo to be the island's most picturesque village, and prices reflect this. Located on a different geological plate to the rest of the island, it was unaffected by the 1953 earthquake. Therefore, the village has some of the oldest buildings on the island.
Sami
Sami is the former capital and a ferry port. Much of Louis de Berniere's film "Captain Corelli's Mandolin" was filmed here. The town has many restaurants and tavernas. From the port you can catch a ferry and visit Ithaca for a day, or travel to the Greek mainland or Italy. Close to Sami is the Bavarian Equestrian Centre which caters for both novices and experienced riders.
Argostoli
Argostoli is the bustling capital of the island of Kefalonia. Here you will find an interesting pedestrianised area offering a wide selection of independent shops, many restaurants and lovely open-air coffee shops. Argostoli also offers a more comprehensive range of nightlife..
Diving
Agia Efimia is fortunate to have a well respected scuba diving school within the village. The dive school caters for both inexperienced and certified divers.
